Holiday season reminder: Shop Local!

This morning, the Johnson County CEO students had the privilege of hearing from Susan Odum, Extension Specialist for Community Development with the University of Illinois Extension. Susan also serves on our Johnson County CEO board. Susan brought insight into the real impact our spending habits have on rural communities like ours.

Through hands-on activities, students saw just how quickly dollars leave the county when spent elsewhere and how powerful local spending can be when those same dollars continue circulating close to home. Our county is currently at a loss of approximately $50 million dollars being earned and then spent outside our county. Susan explained there is the reality of being a rural community where we are limited on options or some resources simply do not exist. Susan’s demonstration of the multiplier effect was especially eye-opening: even a small purchase can create a ripple of support for local businesses, services, and families. Shopping local when you can can make a big impact and keep our dollars circulating where they will make a bigger impact for current and future generations.

As we dive into the holiday shopping season, we encourage everyone to take a moment and ask: “Could I purchase this here in our community?” Each choice truly adds up and helps strengthen Johnson County.

A huge thank you to Susan for sharing her time and expertise, and for reminding us why it matters to Keep It in the County and Shop Local!
