Guest Speaker: Carol Hoffman- Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau
Today, Johnson County CEO had the pleasure of hosting Carol from the Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau. With 32 years of experience, Carol continues to lead tourism efforts across the southern 10 counties of Illinois—currently as a one-woman team dedicated to promoting our region.
She shared that the Shawnee National Forest remains Southern Illinois’ greatest asset, and much of her marketing focuses on outdoor recreation. Most of her work is done through digital marketing, managing a website, social media, and online outreach. Carol emphasized the importance of knowing when a task is beyond your expertise and partnering with professionals who can help your mission succeed.
We also learned about the bureau’s bimonthly board, which includes up to three community representatives from each county. Johnson County is represented by Susan Odum (Illinois Extension) and Lacey Rado (Clad & Cordon Winery)—both of whom help share local events and promote tourism across the region.
Carol encouraged communities to keep her informed of new businesses and local events so she can continue showcasing all Southern Illinois has to offer.
When asked for advice, she shared a message students won’t soon forget:
“Time goes by fast, and it only speeds up. Take advantage of opportunities to travel while you still have the chance.”
Thank you to Carol for visiting with the class today and sharing her wisdom on Southern Illinois tourism!
